Last

Driving back late from our last work day, while Piano man resonated in the background and our worn voices hummed just behind the glow of Elton John and Billy Joel, I was once again struck by the silent beauty of the vast mountain ranges. All week I've been quietly gazing in amazement at the cascading trees, seas of leaves, and the astonishing views of the folding mountains. It is the most wonderful sight I've experienced in a long time, the feeling of looking out into the distance and seeing nothing but trees, mountains, waterfalls, rock faces. Yet tucked under the canopy of these wonderful mountain giants, sit nests of solitude. All week I've been looking over those trees and thinking, someone down there is living below the poverty line.
In eighteen years, I can never remember a time where I've been truly starving and not knowing that there is a hot (or at least microwaveable) meal waiting for me when I got home. And though I've seen people living in rough times, I sometimes feel desensitized. I can walk down the streets of chicago and not only see a homeless person, but I can usually expect to see a homeless person, head down, draped in dirty clothes, and shaking an old plastic cup for change. And though I might on occasion toss a dollar their way, I'm often too focused on whatever i'm doing to think twice about them. But it's the city and the pace is fast, and if I do choose to think about that person, I can often justify their plight by a lack of motivation, probable drug history, and irresponsible decision making.
But coming out here there is something a little different. Driving to our site, we turn off the paved road onto a dirt path, and then a mile up the mountain, past a majestic stream and beautiful, lush vegetation, we come to our house, a quaint little building set beside a worn trailer. Trash littering the ground next to rusting and dirty child toys. There is a feeling that this is forgotten ground. Yet next to our project sat one of my favorite sites of the whole week. This large cliff face with a light trickling stream falling down the side accumulating in a tiny pond with a statue of the virgin in the center. And each time I would get tired or frustrated with my work, I would often walk outside and stand looming over the pond and thinking, this is so beautiful.
And this is what I've come to realize: there is a whole lot of forgotten poverty in this world. I would often think, for every beggar that came to Jesus asking for forgiveness, or healing, or whatever, there were probably thousands who did not come asking for help. And he probably knew that, he probably knew that there was a vast amount of people he would never be able to talk to or try to help and I would constantly ask myself, how could he handle it. If I really thought about it, there is hidden hardship all around. But there is also hidden beauty. And if you can spend your time helping with what you can and marveling at the beauty around you, thats a pretty righteous thing. So though as I was leaving our house on the last day and thinking about all the stuff that I knew I could fix if I just had a few more hours, I did what I could, and I soaked in all the beauty I could while I was there. And when our homeowner was brought to tears saying goodbye to us, though I didn't try and show it, it was an elating feeling.

Keyboard Cat : Our Last Day at ASP

Howdy Y'all,

Today was an amazing final day at ASP! After a long, hard-working week, we finally finished all of our projects at our family home. Today, we finished up tiling one of the bedrooms in the house. We put molding along the wall of the bedroom. Also, we put up some siding around the back door, after a previous ASP group put the new door in. Looking back on our week, it has been amazing transformation and it so rewarding to see the excitement in all the family as they see the changes.

The best part of our day was when our family made us lunch. It was a feast for over fifty people with a variety of different foods. Everything was so good! The most exciting part of lunch was talking with all the family members at lunch. We were so excited to work with Carter and we were blessed to help them in anyway possible.

After all the hard work this week, we decided to go to the beach to celebrate a great week. We went swimming and afterwards we went to go get some ice cream at a local ice cream spot. The ice cream was home-made!

Overall, this week has been one of the greatest mission trips for our group. We got to get to know our group really well and create a great group bond. We were so happy to help Carter out and make his life so much safer, warmer and dryer. As my last mission trip, it has been so rewarding to work with these great youth members. The adult leaders were so supportive, energizing and amazing people to work with. This week will be remembered forever for the life skills we learned and the continuous bonds that we made.

We can't wait to see you all tomorrow and share all our stories with you. Looking forward to heading back to Chicago!

Sincerely,

Mary Smyers

Denver the Guilty Dog (last day)

Last day and there's a ton to do.  First, we split up into two sub groups- girls went to original home and finished painting living room and back of newly installed door area, petted kitties, and ran away from bees. The boys went to project #2 and finished installing a door and tub surround, while wallowing in a heard of bees.  When girls finished all work at the original house, the family was very grateful.  They gave us their email, address, became friends on facebook, and any other way to contact them to just talk and stay in touch.  A lot was done in a short period.  Their house is now much more livable and warm.  We are all just happy we could make the family happy and secure feeling.  They don't have as much as we are used to but in many ways they have a lot of what we are used to because they cared about their families, they cared about us and we cared about them.
The second house was a job we were finishing from a previous week.  Very nice older lady and son.  Unfortunately we didn't have a lot of time and had a lot to do.  We worked late and hard in very tight quarters.  On the fifth day, how we all smelled and being so close to each other wasn't too pleasant.  But, we finished our project on the last day of the ASP summer. This new family greatly appreciated the hard and dedicated work put in to fixing their bath and shower and putting in a brand new back door.  This made their house warmer, safer, and dryer.
Amazingly, we were able to race to the lake for a last one half hour swim.  After that, we enjoyed an amazing delicious treat for less than $2. Best ice cream! whoo! We wish they could open a new "Lake View" in Illinois.
We are packing up clothes now and saying "goodbye" to friends, leaving our ASP families and looking forward to seeing our families we left a week ago.

Denver the Guilty Dog - Day Four

Hello,

Today we started off on the house we've been working on this week. We worked on finishing up painting and working on the wall. After completing that task, we headed out to a new site. We doored a door where the old door had been doored. This was similar to the last time we doored a door. We also fixed walls in a bathroom with drywall. We will be going back tomorrow to finish up. Earlier tonight we had a barbeque with the other groups as well as the families who's houses have been worked on. We were introduced to all of the families. Afterwards, we went to the Lakeview ice cream place where we have gone every day this week. By now, I'm pretty sure the staff knows to expect us at least once per day.

David After the Dentist - Day Four

How's it going fellow UPY's and non-UPY's??

It's "thrift shop Thursday," but it still feels like it is "would you rather Wednesday". Today was a dandy day. I (Matt Hennessy) finally reunite with my old group after spending two days with Denver the Guilty Dog. It feels nice to walk on concrete and work rather than lying under a house and insulating on a two foot ceiling. On the other hand, we got some solid work done today at the Tanya household. Kay and I screwed in some fake and plastic stones on to the wood at the bottom of Tanya's house. We didn't quite finish what we started, but we got enough done to finish it quickly manana. The other part of our group installed a dope bathtub and also put up some drywall in the bathroom. They were having some troubles with a wee-bit of leakage in the toilet, but they fixed it all up in the end. Tanya's dog Leuger (I think that's how you spell it) was barking up a storm today. He's a tiny and a very irritating pup, but I've learned to keep my distance from him. The other puppies didn't quite make it to the end of the week though. We arrived on Monday with six baby puppies in a box..... And then there was one on Thursday.  We're sad some didn't make it, but hoping for the best for the last one!

Keyboard Cat Day 4

What's up y'all?

Today proved to be extraordinarily satisfying and productive in many ways for the Keyboard Cats (Lance, Lauren, Carolyn, Emma, Black Jack, and Charlie).  As far as our project, we have gone from an empty room with a warped floor to four walls with a dirt floor (after ripping out 3 layers of flooring and all of the joists) to a new frame and joists with secure subflooring.  Additionally we have patched up the drywall around the room, primed and painted the whole room, cleaned leftover adhesive from the hall, built a ramp over uneven hallway flooring, and attatched trim in the hallway... so pretty much were the best group out of the bunch.  Despite all the grueling work we have accomplished there is no shortage of fun in our group.  From playing with Sandy the dog to long car adventures to Walmart, Loews, and the ice cream shop, we always have something to talk and laugh about.  After we finished working the fun continued with our trip to the marina for the ASP picnic with the families.  It was so much fun swimming and getting to know the other families and our own families we work with even better.  I especially loved talking to Carter (the man who owns our house) and learning how clever and funny he really is.  Were looking forward to finishing up the flooring and other various projects on our final day at the house tomorrow. We hope everyone is doing well and we can't wait to see you all and tell you more on Saturday!

Sending Lots of Love,

Lauren De Vries and the Keyboard Cats
